‘Skywriter’ Honored as 2025 Hosta of the Year

Apr 4, 2025 | Hosta, News

The American Hosta Growers Association has honored ‘Skywriter’ as the 2025 Hosta of the Year. This medium-sized hosta, bred by Chicago-area hybridizer Dr. Dan Wols, forms a semi-upright mound approximately 15 inches tall and 30 inches wide. Its deeply corrugated, powdery blue leaves have a distinctive ruffled edge and a bright white underside, adding an element of elegance and texture to shaded garden beds. The foliage is further enhanced by striking purple petioles, which provide a bold contrast against the cool blue tones. As summer progresses ‘Skywriter’ produces delicate lavender flowers atop tall purple scapes, bringing an additional layer of interest and attracting pollinators. This cultivar thrives in USDA Zones 3 through 8, preferring bright morning sun with filtered afternoon shade to maintain its distinctive blue hue. Its lineage includes notable hostas such as ‘Marilyn Monroe’ and ‘Neptune’. This award-winning variety is sure to add sophistication and charm to your hosta garden.
