New Hostas for 2025

We have over 20 new varieties of hostas this season, some in very limited supply. The full collection of New Hostas can be found on our website, but we’ll entice you here with several not-to-miss varieties, starting with a mini and working our way up in size. H. ‘Fairy Dust’ is a compact variety with bright yellow foliage that holds its color well all season. This cutie reaches 5 inches tall by 8 inches wide and is perfect for adding a touch of whimsy to your garden or container. H. ‘Buttonwood Bay’ forms a medium-small clump with very blue, pointed and ruffled leaves that are reminiscent of gently rolling waves. Grows 13 inches tall and 28 inches wide. If you’re looking for a nice medium-sized new hosta for your garden, check out H. ‘My Fair Lady’. This upright hosta has striking tri-colored foliage, with deep blue-green leaves and apple-green jetting around creamy yellow centers. It boasts large white flowers in early summer and grow 17 inches tall and 36 inches wide. H. ‘Holar Purple Flash’ is an unusual hosta with pointed green leaves that are held on reddish-purple petioles. The purple bleeds up into the center of the leaf, especially in spring. H. ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ is an extremely ruffled variety that gives the impression of ‘dancing’ in the garden. Glaucus blue foliage with heavy rippling and wide creamy margins forms a mound 18 inches tall and 30 inches wide. Another medium hosta is H. ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’, which has shiny green leaves with very prominent veining and lots of ripples. The foliage tapers to a sharp, curled tip and grows 16 inches tall and 24 inches wide. An introduction by hosta hybridizer Bob Solberg is H. ‘Plum Pudding’, with intensely colored blue leaves that are ruffled and held on plum-red petioles. Bob Solberg himself will be visiting Hornbaker Gardens on July 20 to give a presentation on hostas. He’ll then be available in the garden center to answer any questions you may have.

A selection of our 2025 New Hostas

For a noteworthy specimen or to fill a sizable space to fill in your shade garden, you need to look at these larger varieties. H. ‘Lone Star’ is a green-centered sport of the popular ‘Key West’. The leaves are bright green with a vivid gold margin. Plant in some bright filtered shade for the best gold coloration in the margin. Grows 26 inches tall and 50 inches wide. A bit of an unusual minty color can be found with H. ‘Mint Rushmore’. This large hosta boasts very large, rounded green leaves that are moderately corrugated with rippled margins. ‘Mint Rusmore’ grows 27 inches tall by 68 inches wide. H. ‘Sound of Music’ is a giant hosta, growing 30 inches tall and 60+ inches wide. This one will add immediate interest with heavily corrugated, variegated foliage. The chartreuse centers jet to glaucous blue-green margins and the centers mature to creamy white in summer. Another giant is H. ‘Gigantosaurus’, which will come roaring to life in early spring as one of the first hostas to emerge. Large blue leaves have a wavy yellow margin, and this mammoth of a hosta grows up to 32 inches tall and 78 inches wide.

Mark your calendars for our Open House and Hosta Hike, June 13-15th, and our Bob Solberg Hosta event coming July 20th. More information can be found on our event page, as it is announced.
