The American Hosta Growers Association has picked a unique hosta as the 2023 Hosta of the Year. ‘Neptune’ has arching, wedge-shaped leaves that hold their powdery blue color well into summer. But what really sets this hosta apart are the beautifully rippled margins of the leaves and the way that the leaves seem to cascade over one another like a fountain of blue water.
The leaves of ‘Neptune’ have good substance, making it less susceptible to slug damage. It grows into an impressive, large clump around two feet tall and four feet wide. Lavender flowers appear above the foliage on scapes three feet tall in late summer. ‘Neptune’ is one of those hostas that gets more impressive with each year of maturity. Get one in the garden now, give it some fertilizer and water, and in a few years you will have a real stunner.
