Hostas
Hornbaker Gardens is probably best known for our hostas. We carry over 500 varieties. The first display clumps were planted in 1987 and new varieties have been planted every year since then. In our display gardens visitors can see for themselves what mature clumps of any given variety will look like someday in their own gardens.
In the retail sales area, potted hostas are arranged in alphabetical order so that shoppers can easily find the varieties they seek. Most varieties have been field grown, with divisions being potted into one-gallon containers, except for some smaller varieties. In many cases, the one-gallon pot will contain multiple divisions. We do not multiply the price of the hosta times the number of divisions. You get the whole pot for the base price of the hosta.
Some of the newest hostas have been grown in pots from tissue cultured liners. We grow these plants until a substantial root system has been established before we start selling them. These newer hostas may be available at our nursery, in pots, sooner than they will be offered online.
Ordering and Shipping Information
We take orders all year for hostas, but only ship from April 1 through September 30.
We ship US Postal Service Priority Mail only; shipping only on Mondays and Tuesdays allowing plants to arrive before the weekend. Shipping costs are $10 for the first 5 plants and .50 for each additional plant.
Clump Hostas
Several varieties of hostas are available in larger clump sizes at prices generally ranging from $20.00 to $50.00. The varieties available will vary from year to year as our supply of field grown stock of any given variety rises or is depleted.
Clumps are not offered online. Call or visit the nursery for availability of any given variety. Clumps can be shipped for $12.00/clump.
