I’ve been walking our propagation beds, deciding which hosta varieties to dig and pot up for next year, and I’m amazed at how good some of the varieties look, given the heat that we have had this summer, which has caused many varieties to look pretty shabby. Three varieties, ‘Lakeside Dragonfly’, ‘Yin’, and ‘Fantasy Island’, really caught my eye this morning. The foliage on these varieties all looked fresh and unblemished. I snapped these pictures before we dug them.
‘Lakeside Dragonfly’ forms a medium sized clump. Its pointed, dark green foliage has yellow margins that lighten to white. The narrow foliage on young plants will broaden with maturity. The margins tend to jet into the centers of the leaves.
I’ve always thought that ‘Yin’ is a very classy looking hosta. It forms a medium-small clump about 2′ in diameter. ‘Yin’ has dark green, shiny foliage with yellow margins on narrow foliage that broadens with maturity.
‘Fantasy Island’ is the smallest of these three, listed as a small hosta, and growing to a diameter of 16-18″. It has rounded yellow leaves, lightening to cream, with green margins.
All three of these excellent hostas have looked good from spring until now, which is saying something after the rough, dry, hot summer that we have had.
